For emergency communication in the event of a family death or serious illness of a family member, the birth of a child or in other family emergences the Red Cross sends messages quickly, anywhere in the world, including ships at sea, embassies and isolated military units.

Service member's Information

  • Full Name (with correct spelling)
  • Social Security Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Full Military Address, Squadron or Unit
  • Branch of Service and Rank
  • Permanent Duty Station (if temporarily assigned elsewhere)
  • Phone Numbers for work and home
  • Home Address

 

For notification of an illness:

  • Name of patient
  • Relationship to service member
  • Physician's Name
  • Hospital or Nursing Home & Location
  • Phone Number (if possible)
  • Hospital Room Number

 

For a death notification:

  • Name of deceased
  • Relationship to service member
  • Funeral Home or Hospital & Location
  • Phone Number of Hospital or Funeral Home
  • Home (if possible)
The American Red Cross caseworker will need to verify the information by calling the physician, hospital or funeral home. Verification is done before any message can be processed. After the American Red Cross verifies a situation the military is then notified of the request. The military makes all decisions relating to the service member's emergency leave.

The American Red Cross does NOT and can NOT authorize leave.
